 10/06/2010 : Geary's reunion send-off(posted by Bill Day)

Geary's Farewell Dinner

IT WAS just like old times as cricket club colleagues gathered in an Ashford restaurant on Wednesday evening to celebrate Allan Gear's short visit to the town.

Ashford's former overseas player, who lives in Sydney, was back in the town in which he spent the summer of 1979 playing Kent League cricket.

Inspired by Derryl Eames' decision to abandon his lifelong boycott of curry houses, Allan chose the Cinnamon Spice in Eureka Place for an emotional re-union with his old chums.

The table plan of guests read like a Who's Who of the great and the good, the not so good, and the downright awful. The stories flowed like vintage wine; the laughter never stopped; and, by the end, the reception was awash with tearful goodbyes as the old Aussie vanished in a taxi, promising to return if England retained the Ashes.

Among the 20-strong group attending the Reunion of 79:-Allan Gear, Julian Glenister, Derryl Eames. Brian Hamley, David Flawn, Chris Senior, Des High, Mickey Bowden, Simon Taylor and Bill Day.

At one stage, Flawnie was so overcome with emotion, it demanded an explanation. Getting-up a full head of steam, he said: “Sorry lads, we're sitting in a restaurant built in a field I used as a kid. All those buttercups flattened by concrete. So many memories…”

Sparky snorted his disgust at this show of sentiment, and Mickey Bowden did a very good impression of Malcolm Marshall sledging an English batsman. “Too much cinnamon, not enough spice” said Derryl, declaring himself an expert on Bangladeshi cuisine.

Hammers said he was living in blissful harmony with a new squeeze, and was still bowling thunderbolts with an arm so low umpires needed protective headgear.

Des High raised his arm to demonstrate an off-break he can still roll off the tip of his fingers. "All very well" said Julian, "but can you still get your leg over?" The restaurant staff collapsed with laughter, Simon Taylor wet himself and Bill Day picked king prawn vindaloo off his favourite trousers. “I'll have you know, young men, we were all cricketers, and very fine ones” said High, flicking another imaginary off-break at the head waiter.

A mistake. The waiter said: “What about a game of cricket? We could beat you lot without trying.” And so a deal was struck for a Test Match to be played later this summer between the Old Ashford Farts and Bangladesh.

Geary, distributing glasses of his favourite cognac, said: “I'll fly back to open the batting.” Derryl mocked: “If we beat you, I want free Indian meals for a year.” Several diners were still squabbling over who should field at first slip in the big match when a fleet of taxis rolled into Eureka.

Choosing the cheapest fare, Geary waved a cheerful farewell as he was spirited into the gloom. "See you in Sydney" he yelled through an open window at Sparky, Derryl and Julian, a trio destined to watch the Sydney and Adelaide Ashes Tests down under next winter.

09/06/2010 : The death of Audrey Palmer(posted by Bill Day)

WITH deep regret, I have to inform members that former Life Vice-President Audrey Palmer has died. She had been unwell for some time. A funeral service will be held at Charing Crematorium on Wednesday, 16th June, at 2pm.

Audrey was a stalwart member of the Ashford club for many years. Wife of the late Bertie Palmer, who ran outfitters' shops in Ashford and Folkestone for much of his life, Audrey was an ever-present supporter at matches, and on the arm of Bertie at all club... (read more)

 07/06/2010 : Top Gear(posted by Bill Day)

ALLAN GEAR returned to Ashford Town Cricket Club this week more than 30 years after playing a Kent League season for the club as an overseas player.

Allan, now coaching at Sydney grade club Northern Districts, opened the batting for Ashford in the 1979 season. He fell in love with the English way of life that year, cutting his teeth on Shepherd Neame, hot curries, and playing at least five times a week if he could get a game.

He needed steady income for a flamboyant lifestyle in the late Seventies, so managed to obtain work for Marks & Spencer as a cleaner; and Geerings as a white van driver.

In the past few days, he has returned to Ashford, catching-up with old friends at Stacians Park, where he watched the first team beat Beckenham last Saturday. He was back again on Sunday, with Bill Day, a regular sparring partner in that year of 79, to inspect Ashford Town's junior development initiative. Simon Taylor and Mickey Bowden gave him a lovely welcome and the opportunity to pass on the benefit of his coaching experience at Northern Districts to the kids.

Allan is due to attend a reunion dinner with Derryl Eames, Julian Glenister, John Seccombe, Chris Senior, Brian Hamley, Des High, Simon Taylor, Mickey Bowden and Bill Day at Ashford's Cinnamon and Spice restaurant on Wednesday evening (9 June).

Allan said: "It's terrific to see Ashford in such good shape after some difficult times. I loved the club when I came over to play all those years ago, and I've managed to keep in touch ever since.

"It was a great privilege to be asked to address the colts, something I shall remember always. I was in digs on my first visit, lodging with Yvonne Eames - Derryl's mother - in Albert Road."

Bill Day continues to remind Allan of the wager he lost on his last visit to Kent in the Millennium Year. Gear rubbished Day's challenge of taking him on a visit to a local cricket club, where it was impossible to see the stumps from a certain part of the outfield. A few hours later, Gear was emptying his pockets of sterling having lost the bet at Bilsington CC!

01/06/2010 : Happy Boot Fair days(posted by Bill Day)

THE old booter with a wide brimmed hat heaved her enormous bosom in my direction and said: “Fine young men, who are these fine young men?”

I clicked my heels at the gate leading to Ashford Town’s Bank Holiday boot fair. “Thank you Ma’am” I replied, “they’re Ashford’s finest cricketers.” “No, no” she hissed, beneath unshaven morning shadow, “that one there, that Viking of a man.”

I realised the old booter... (read more)
