After two weeks of travelling to South East London the Ashford 1st XI finally got to return to the "nest" at Stacians Park. Two changes to the team from last weeks win saw Captain Craig Buckham return to the fold and the in form Gary Sutton come in for his first appearance for the 1st XI this season, on paper this was one of the most experienced teams to take the field this year.

For the second week running Ashford had to forfeit the toss due to having no umpire and were asked by the Harvel Captain to bowl. With confidence already high from last weeks victory, the "Ants" took to the field and the opening bowling partnership of Simon Taylor and Mohsin Raza continued what they have produced all season, the pair bowling in tandem with their tight line and length again gave Ashford the early momentum, before the Harvel openers could blink 4 overs were bowled for just 1 run, Taylor and Raza continued this restricting the Harvel opening pair to just a few singles in these early blows of the game. Captain Buckham then looked to change things up and gave Alex Watson the ball, conditions at this time suiting the big fast bowler and with his first ball gave Ashford the wicket they were looking for, his extra pace and bounce forcing an error from the opening bat who mis-timed his pull shot to spoon the ball in the air to wicketkeeper Gavin Hope, this was truly a team wicket with the early pressure put on by the Taylor/Raza bowling contributing to this rash shot selection. The Town side continued there tight bowling and restricted Harvel to just 25 runs off 15 overs well below par on a good Stacians Park pitch. Ashford again looked to bowl in partnerships, it was now the turn of the "spin twins" Buckham and Liam Tegg. Buckham made the next breakthrough, with wicketkeeper Hope taking a good low catch to remove Walker for 28, Harvel's overseas player Thompson played a few good shots, but it seemed that they were well behind the run rate. Raza came back into the attack and quickly removed Thompson for a well made 51, Middle order wickets then few regularly with Raza and Buckham both picking up there second wickets, Harvel now looking to pick up the run rate in the last 15 overs, Buckham claimed his 3rd wicket in removing Ramsey for 37 and Liam Tegg getting in on the action by taking the wicket of Freebody (16) with a good catch on the boundary by Tim Pichowski. Runs starting flow towards the end of the innings, Ashford then lost Simon Taylor, with a dislocated finger, he got a hand to a ball "drilled" back towards him off his own bowling and had to leave the field, Tegg was asked to finish the over and managed to pick up his second wicket of the game by bowling Ashdown. Some big blows by Wakemen (34*) in the final over managed to lift Harvel to 218-8, a score that they would have been happy with given the start that they had. Ashford's bowlers ending with following figures, Craig Buckham 3-61, Mo Raza 2-35, Liam Tegg 2-58 and Alex Watson 1-40, Simon Taylor only going for 11 runs in 6.4 overs.

Ashford began the run chase with a new opening partnership of Tim Pichowski and Gary Sutton. Pichowski was unlucky to get a rare ball that kept low and was bowled in the early overs bring James Watson to the crease. Sutton continued his good form hitting some powerful boundaries and the looked solid taking the score to 57 before Sutton was bowled off his legs trying to sweep for well made 43, which included 8 boundaries. Ashford were looking solid at this time, although they seemed to be behind the rate required they kept wickets in hand which was the important factor in this run chase with depth in batting that the "Ants" have. Tegg and Fattore both fell as Ashford began to up the rate required which was now slowly creeping up. Stuart Paine then joined Watson at the crease and with 15 overs to go Ashford needed 120 to win, The pair ticked the board over and Watson got to his fifty, this was the point when the game really kicked into life, with a growing crowd watching from the balcony the pair went into another gear, quality shots from both Watson and Paine took Ashford ever closer to what seemed to a result that seemed unlikely just 30 minutes earlier. Paine (26) finally fell with the score on 187 and a partnership of 91. Paine's supporting role for Watson was just what the team needed, giving Watson the strike and putting away the bad ball, his running between the wickets should also be mentioned as this was often towards the danger end and put the Harvel fielders under pressure. James Watson was now joined at the crease by brother Alex and it was long before the Watsons were celebrating James reaching a magnificent 100 with yet another well struck 4. Doubling up from 50 to 100 in no time at all, Watson finally fell to an excellent boundary catch for 113, hitting 12 fours and 3 sixes, one of which went some 50 metres into the next field. Watson's innings was timed to perfection his second century of the season now giving him 475 runs in the league. This getting the Ants within touching distance to 219 target, Buckham joined Alex Watson, with just 16 needed to win of 14 balls. The captain saw his team home in style hitting boundary regularly and with just 3 to win off 4 balls ended the game with a big six over mid on, the celebrations began as soon as the ball left the bat! Confidence is high in the Ashford camp following this victory going into the next weeks big game with League leaders Hythe, This was a good team performance with all 11 men contributing to this win.

  19/07/2008 : vs Old Colfeians (A) - Kent League

Add extra details to this Match Report

Neither team had an umpire so the toss was taken and won by Old Colfeians who decided to bat first.

Again we saw the introduction of new and seasoned players to the team in order to try and give us more of a balanced batting line up. Shane Beech played his first Kent league game and worked hard in the field taking a very good catch off Pete Davisons bowling as well as contrubuting well with the ball finishing with figures of 1 for 22 off 5 overs. Max Townley also returned to the team and was rewarded with his first Kent league wkt finishing on 1 for 43 off 6. It was also great to have Pete Davison (2 for 47 off 8) back in the team who offered more than his bowling by his good communication in the field. He made the first break through which took the pressure off and allowed us as a team to settle down and start to work for each other in the field. It was also great to welcome back Andy Harcourt (1 for 69 off 13)who was unlucky not to walk away with 4 wkts the first 1 being a 100% LBW, but the 15 year old home umpire did not see it that way. It was also great to welcome Martin Crowhurst back into the side who shared his experience and knowledge throughout the game.

Old Colfeians declared on 242 off 47 overs and those 3 overs would be the decider.

Martin Crowhurst opened the batting and was asked to stick while the rest of the team played around him. This he did until the 45th over when he was trapped for LBW on 57. A truly brilliant innings executed to the letter with some wonderful shots. Unfortunatly we again lacked the quality to support him and indeed challenge the score set by Old Colfeians. By 20 overs it become clear that we were never going to get the runs so the game plan was changed and we now were playing for a losing draw. They changed thier bowling frequently which meant that the batters could not settle. The final 10 overs were very tense, but we were finally all out in the 49th over with only 19 balls to come.
